Survey

THANK YOU
to all the teachers who completed and returned the survey.

The survey of teachers in Scottish primary schools took place in May 2013. The survey had two main purposes:
- To ensure that as many teachers as possible, from a wide range of backgrounds and levels of experience, have an opportunity to contribute to the study.
- To inform the questions asked in the interviews which will form part of case studies taking place during school year 2013-14.

A survey pack containing an explanatory letter, a copy of the Plain Language Statement, the 4-page survey, and a Freepost reply envelope, was sent to Head Teachers of primary schools in 24 Scottish local authority areas (1643 schools). Head Teachers were asked to nominate one class teacher within the school to complete and return the survey. The survey was also available to download.

A response rate of around 16% was achieved, with surveys being received from teachers in all 24 local authorities.  The returned surveys came from teachers in all of the 5 SIMD* areas and 6 Urban/Rural categories used in the study to ensure a good cross-section of opinion.

Findings from the initial survey analysis contributed to the interviews with teachers and farmers.

*SIMD = Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation. Identified in relation to the postcode of the responding teacher's school. Further information here.
